The Limits and Potential of AI

Artificial intelligence has captured the imagination of the tech industry. Using enormous datasets scraped from the Internet OpenAI built ChatGPT, an AI that seems to act human. OpenAI’s dominance of the field has come into question with the surprise ouster of Sam Altman. Are AIs proponents over-promising its capabilities? Are the critics missing key advantages and limitations? I have been trying to use it to code for the past few months, and am surprised at how far it still has to grow.

A New Half Marathon Personal Record

Yesterday I ran the BAA Half Marathon and set a new personal record: 1 hour, 48 minutes, and 20 seconds. This unofficial finish time is 1 minute and 39 seconds faster than I was in 2018. After being benched for nearly a year and failing to meet or exceed any of my personal records pre-COVID, this feels fantastic.

The Porsche Driving Experience

On Saturday I made a pit stop on the way to the airport at the Porsche Experience Center. This monument to motorsport is equipped with two tracks, a museum, a cafe, restaurant, and simulator room. The primary thing on offer is an experience of 90 minutes with the Porsche that you pick. The price point is on the higher side, but you get what you pay for.

An Atomic Show in Atomic City

I am back from Las Vegas, Atomic City, where U2 infused a previously forgettable single with soul. If you listen to Atomic City it has echoes of Elvis’s Viva Las Vegas which was on the playlist at the Sphere before U2, with stand-in drummer Bram Van Der Berg, took the stage. The Sphere itself is an astonishing venue with a huge flaw, but U2 delivered an Atomic show that blew up on social media.
