Code for America to Spin Off its Brigades

Yesterday Code for America announced that it is no longer fiscally sponsoring its Brigade program. While a disruption on the administration side, it should not impact the programming and partnerships that Code for Boston has been providing the community since the inception of the Brigade program in 2012. The organization relies on funds it has raised on its own that are earmarked for our use, and now is as good a time as any to show your support. When we find a new fiscal sponsor, the money will move with us.

The Urban League Heat Pump Accelerator project has grown in the new year. Last night we had nearly thirty people participating in our project. This includes a stable of dedicated regulars that have been pushing the different project groups forward: data, front-end, back-end, and now marketing. With that momentum we are hoping to ship our project in the next month or two.

Stranger Things in BPDA's South Boston Existing Conditions Report

Caught in Southie announced yesterday a Pint with a Planner event to discuss the existing conditions report in South Boston. I will not be able to make it because I have a conflict with Code for Boston, but took time to dig into the nearly 150 page report. While many parts are not surprising, other parts are sci-fi. In the alternate universe the BPDA pulled data from, the 7 bus is not overcrowded.

The Time I Almost Missed Payroll

Before I was a software engineer I worked in politics. In this particular case I was hired as a campaign manager. The campaign manager is the CEO of the campaign. They report to a board along with the candidate. A few months into the campaign we had several employees on payroll. I typically checked our balances at the end of every week, and noticed that seven days before payday we were at risk of not being able to cover all the salaries.
